Oenochoe

Work from the circle of the Painter of Athens, Attica, Greece, ca. 480 BCE

Ochre-coloured ceramic clay, red-figure decoration. Details engraved in the black reflet. The subject of the painting – a scene from the circle of Dionysus (reclining Dionysus is leaning against a pillow and gazing towards a maenad in a chiton. A figure of a standing satyr is on each side of the panel). The space behind Dionysus is filled with stylised sprigs of ivy. A band of checkerboard surrounds the neck.
